Problem

Users of streaming service platforms find it challenging to pick the right show from over 817,000 TV shows and 200+ streaming services available, causing a 46% difficulty rate in discovering the content they want.

My role

I worked as a product designer in collaboration with a software developer to create a product that reduces TV series search overwhelming and helps to find a perfect content in a fast and efficient way.

Main hypothesis

Main hypothesis

Main hypothesis

People struggle and get overwhelmed when they are trying to choose a TV series to watch, so they end up watching pushed content or wasting a lot of time searching a perfect TV show.

Goal & methods

I conducted UX research, including desk research, competitive analysis and user interviews to learn users' needs and explore problem opportunities. By focusing on user interviews, I gained a better understanding of how users behave and got a rich insights about their personal experiences and challenges.

Approach

I identified the target audience as Gen Z and Millennials because, based on desk research, TV series watching is among the top 5 activities for these groups in 2021. To conduct user interviews, I recruited 5 participants aged 19-28 from a TV series fan community on a social media platform.

Users get inspiration for new TV series from Reels & Tiktok — is one of the key insights from user interview.

Storyboarding is a magic tool I use for ideation and collaboration

It helps me empathise with users' motivations and explain things clearly to my team in a simple and efficient way.

Prioritisation workshop

We prioritised features considering their potential impact and feasibility. It helped us streamline our ideas. Consequently, we chose to prioritise a video feed and onboarding for the initial iteration, deferring the development of platform connection integration.

Challenge

Since we agreed to develop an iOS mobile app, my additional requirement was to design a solution that aligns with the Human Interface Guidelines to ensure intuitive and faster-to-develop patterns.

Since we agreed to develop an iOS mobile app, my additional requirement was to design a solution that aligns with the Human Interface Guidelines to ensure intuitive and faster-to-develop patterns.

We set up three ways to evaluate our solution

One of the metrics we used to measure app's interest during usability testing, while others will be assessed post-app development focusing on technical aspects.

1

1

User satisfaction. Our main goal is to determine the interest rate through usability testing with a simplified questionnaire (USE) to assess usefulness, satisfaction and ease of use.

2

2

Suggestion accuracy. We want to evaluate it by tracking the click-rate of adding TV series to the watching list from a series feed.

3

3

Time to find content. Finding content is crucial for us to validate a solution. We want to monitor the average time users spend before deciding on a TV show.

Problem opportunity

Create a personalised feed for viewers that allows to explore various TV series without switching between streaming services

Solution 1: The onboarding process that provides two benefits

We collect users' preferences during onboarding to customise a series feed and provide personalised suggestions based on their favourite TV series.

Also the included app tutorial helps users quickly learn how to use the new app and gestures without guessing.

"I want to quickly check what I watched"

Solution 2: Keep track of TV series in one app, so you are never lost in your all subscriptions

We solved the problem of remembering what users watched by allowing users to track series and access a watchlist without switching between platforms.

Extra bonus is that users can decide which platform is worth subscribing to.

"I want to be actively engaged in the app"

Solution 3: Engaging videos redefining search exploration

We enriched TV series’ search experience with a series feed of short videos, scene cuts, and trailers, allowing quick and engaged decisions.

Users can now effortlessly navigate and discover new TV shows using integrated well-know gestures.

We included the search with refined categories that reduces overwhelm.

Usability testing

It wasn’t that smooth right away. I put first iteration to the validation with usability testing and it uncovered a few hiccups

Approach

I conducted 5 usability tests, each involving 2 tasks and a simplified USE questionnaire that assessed app’s functionality based on four criteria: helpfulness, engagement, ease of use, and likelihood to use.

Results

The overall interest rating reached 4.6 / 5, with the highest score (4.8) in app engagement and the lowest score (4.4) in ease of use.

Users found the app to be helpful and engaging, but provided feedback on button placement, missing crucial information in TV series section and minor issues related with prototype clickability.

Outcome

After usability evaluations and design improvements, the application moved from idea to a satisfaction rating of 4.6 out of 5 from users and the execution phase

What would I do differently next time

1

1

1

Involve users to test app functionality in the early stages, enabling quick evaluation of design solutions and saving time on developing complex prototypes.

2

2

2

Ensure to prepare a roadmap upfront to help the team adhere to deadlines and effectively monitor work progress.

What did I learned

3

3

3

Collaborative workshops with a dev team not only help us understand technical limitations when defining and prioritising solutions but also provide a different perspective.

4

4

4

Creating of a design system or using component libraries in the early stages is beneficial. It saves time during development and ensures consistency and accessibility.
